Britain is a country that encourages democratic freedom of thought and expression for its citizens.

This means that at the core of British Values are the values you are brought up with and those you choose to hold.

You have a civic duty to also be tolerant of other's values when practised respectfully, and their choices even you disagree.

Values in Professional Life

In this country workers safety and welfare is an important value. You have several rights by law to protect you.

However, if you feel you've been treated unfairly, in Britain you also have the right to raise disputes and have them acted on.

You have a responsibility to follow guidelines and respect the values of your employer where they don't infringe on your rights.

Values of Democracy

Democracy literally means the rule of the people. It holds that citizens have the ultimate power over how their state is run.

The UK uses an indirect representative democracy, based on elections locally and nationally, alongside referendums.

This means you have power over how the UK is run. By being politically aware and active, you can help make the UK better.

Values of Law

In the UK, nobody is above the law. This is what is called the Rule of Law. This helps our democracy work.

You are expected to resolve disputes civilly, where necessary using the civil courts. If you breach this, you could end up in the criminal courts.

These institutions exist to keep Britain a safe and civil place to live, with everyone following the same rules.

Values of Respect & Tolerance

The UK is a very diverse nation made of ancestry across the world. Many different beliefs and cultures make up Britain.

Communities have a social responsibility to approach diversity positively and to always encourage the inclusion of everyone.

We must tolerate and respect the smaller communities that make up the UK because they have as much right to be here as we do.

LGBT Values

The UK aims to be a respectful place to people of all genders and sexualities, just as for race and religion.

You have a duty to be respectful to other differences, and a right to expect the same without prejudice.

This matters because nobody deserves discrimination based on a trait or belief that is a fundamental part of who they are.
