The government introduced a new Act in 2015 to help and stop people from becoming terrorists. It introduced new laws which aim to support people at risk from being recruited by terrorists and much stricter rules on people suspected of being terrorists.

The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act is divided into a number of sections including:

Temporary Restrictions on Travel

The new act gives the government and the police more powers regarding the movement of people suspected of being involved with terrorism.

Terrorism Prevention & Investigation Measures

Part two of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act refers to new laws on how terrorist activity can be stopped and investigated. police will have the power to:

Find out where suspects are living.
Find out where they are travelling to.
Search them or their homes for weapons or explosives.
Ensure they attend appointments (eg. report to a police station).

Data Retention

This 'data retention' law allows the authorities to search for and keep a record of any internet activity that they think might be related to terrorism.

This includes web pages and social media sites viewed and the I.D number of the computer that was used.

Government surveillance will produce enormous amounts of data. Obviously, the authorities will be using detailed 'intelligence' (information to help narrow their search down.

Aviation, Shipping & Rail

The government will have powers to know who is travelling by air, sea and rail.

The UK's population is 65 million people and there are over 60 airports, 700 seaports and 2,500 railway stations in the country.

Gathering information on who is travelling and where will be a huge task.
